The All American Sport of Bipartisan Bashing

This is the Will Durst one man show at New World Stages (that is what they are calling it these days, I believe).

Staged as a one man comedy show, almost entirely political--this worked with zingy one liners, story and a point.

The part of the show that keeps coming back to mind isn't comedy as much as a good point. Democracy is a great idea. If we had to do it all over again, it wouldn't be a bad idea. We should elect people, pay them money, send them to a central location to represent us and work in our best interest. You start to forget, though, in modern day politics that these people are supposed to represent your best interests. They are supposed to be working for you. It's so easy to forget.

And, the best line for me was that before George W. Bush was president we thought any idiot could be president. The easily grasped implication is that we know that to not be true anymore.

The main theme of the night, however, was that we have been pushed into a surreal bipartisan nation, when actually we have a very large swing section of the country. Most people, before Y2K were swing voters or at least just looking for the best candidate. And, it's okay to not be red or blue, but to be purple. Right now, Will Durst proposes, it doesn't feel like the middle exists. But, for many people it actually does still exist. The middle still exists for him, even though he has much to say about the present administration.

I never go to comedy shows, but this one had a point. And, it was interesting and I'm glad I went. Durst's jokes are funny. But, there's a serious side. His message has hope and it's good to see someone both truly on America's side and in the middle once again.
